Cursus beschrijving

Combining notions of Classical Arabic and Levantine dialect, this course is tailored for anyone wishing to learn the language and interact with the Lebanese environment. We consider that Arabic needs to be practiced on a daily basis to encourage and motivate the student to communicate, for this purpose a combination of Dialect and bases of Modern Standard Arabic is a must.

For students interested in strictly learning MSA, this program is the right one for you. The MSA program goes through all the steps of the learning process, all levels are accepted from complete beginners to C level students.

The curriculum at the Levantine Institute of Tripoli (LEVIT) relies on several manuals such as “Al Kitaab” from Georgetown University Press, or “Easy Arabic Reader” by Jane Wightwick that are used in most of the Arabic departments around the world.

However, these books have proven to be incomplete if used each on their own. Therefore, the methodology we follow is a mix of multiple contents: written, audio and video. Classes are structured on a balance between technical: grammar, rules, exceptions and intuitive: musicality, mnemonic triggers, oral traditions and pronunciation in order to achieve the four key competencies: oral and written production and oral and written comprehension.

The purpose is to live and learn the Arabic language as a whole, through its culture, history, anecdotes and actual connections and communication with the context and the humans who populate it. The LEVIT considers that classes only give you the keys to express yourself and a great deal of the work needs to be done outside of the classroom. This is why we chose Tripoli: it is a place where any student can easily practice what they learned during the courses.

Het Levantine Institute of Tripoli biedt Arabische cursussen van hoge kwaliteit voor buitenlanders en Arabische expats die zowel Levantine Dialect als Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) onderwijzen.

Het Instituut biedt ook mogelijkheden voor vrijwilligerswerk om Frans, Engels te onderwijzen en / of deel te nemen aan verschillende onderwijsgerelateerde programma's in samenwerking met lokale NGO's in Noord-Libanon.

Het doel is om de Arabische taal als geheel te leven en te leren door middel van de cultuur, geschiedenis, anekdotes en feitelijke verbindingen en communicatie met de context en de inwoners. De LEVIT is van mening dat de lessen u alleen leren om uzelf uit te drukken en dat veel van het werk buiten de klas moet worden gedaan. Daarom hebben we voor Tripoli gekozen: het is een plek waar elke student gemakkelijk kan oefenen wat hij tijdens de cursussen heeft geleerd. Door samenwerking met lokale ngo's en het Maancentrum voor kinderen op ons terrein, moedigen we studenten van LEVIT ten zeerste aan om vrijwilligerswerk te doen en zoveel mogelijk te communiceren met de lokale gemeenschap.

Naast privélessen biedt de LEVIT twee programma's aan:

Het Levantine Immersion-programma neemt de studenten mee van het dagelijkse basisgesprek en de woordenschat naar meer complexe onderwerpen, afhankelijk van de voortgang. Het onderwijs richt zich ook op het gebruik van de oorsprong van de woorden, de overeenkomsten en verschillen tussen de spreektaal en het letterlijke en een uitleg van de grammaticaregels die het dialect structureren. U leert hoe u Levantine spreekt en krijgt achtergrondinformatie over de formele vorm van de Arabische taal. Gevorderde lessen behandelen sociaal-politieke onderwerpen uit onze regio, evenals cultuur, literatuur en media.

Het MSA-programma (Modern Standard Arabic) voor alle niveaus, gebaseerd op dezelfde interactieve filosofie. Beginnend met beginnerslessen, brengt ons MSA-programma de basis van Arabische geletterdheid helemaal naar gespecialiseerde onderwerpen die zich richten op journalistiek, politiek, internationale betrekkingen en sociologie voor de meer gevorderde niveaus. Om te voldoen aan de internationale normen van MSA, vertrouwt de LEVIT voornamelijk op het boek "Al-Kitaab".

School locatie

Neem een taxi naar het Charles Helou-busstation in Beiroet. Elke 30 minuten vertrekt er een Connex-bus naar Tripoli, wifi is beschikbaar aan boord. Eenmaal aangekomen op de eindbestemming van de bus, Sahet el Nour, loopt u naar het noorden richting Azmi Beik street, het is 10 minuten lopen, we bevinden ons 100 meter verderop in Azmi street aan de linkerkant.

Het is ook mogelijk om van Tall central place (waar de Ottomaanse klok zich bevindt) naar de LEVIT te lopen. Vanaf Tall is het 5 minuten lopen.

"Not what I expected"

I had two teachers. The one I had in group lesson was great, she has put lot of efforts to teach outside of the box. I have progressed and improved a lot thanks to her dedication. The second teacher wasn’t very professional and didn’t have a lot of experience teaching foreign students since she has been teaching kids until then. Curriculum very disappointing, with little consistency.

The administration is overall not organised. No one was here for the check in at the house, I had to wait one hour for them to send one of their maintenance staff. There was no wifi in the house and no indication or welcome tips for you to get around. The house was more like an annex of the office institute. The administration staff will often show up without any notice. They also gave the key to one of the student for her to have her class in our house with again no notification. The house had active cameras, I have asked several times to remove them, it’s only been covered one week before the end.

No activities took place, you must pay more if you want to participate. I wouldn’t recommend to book the taxi through the institute as they charge double the price.
